Keeping a long goal alive through a busy quarter

Every long goal meets a season that has no room for it: a move, a new job, a new baby, an illness. The usual response is to stop completely and promise to restart later. Restarting is expensive, because the goal has gone cold.

A gentler option is maintenance mode. Decide the smallest version of the goal that still counts as alive, and do only that.

  • A novelist writes one paragraph on Sunday.
  • A runner keeps a single easy twenty-minute run a week.
  • A language learner listens to one short dialogue on the commute.

Write the maintenance version on your board, with an end date, so it stays a deliberate choice and does not turn into quiet drift. When the season passes, you will be resuming, not starting over.
